Q&A - Fitness Monitors
What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method?
Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The monitor sends an extremely weak electrical current through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. The weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The monitor is calculated by a formula that includes five factors; electric resistance, height, weight, age and gender.
What is visceral fat?
Visceral fat is located around the organs. Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased level of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common conditions such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sedentary life style causes excess visceral fat, and exercise can reduce it quicker than subcutaneous fat (fat located under skin).
What is resting metabolism?
Resting metabolism is the energy to maintain vital functions and it counts 60 to 70% of total energy consumption. Knowing your resting metabolism can help your dietplan. If you can increase daily activity while keeping food intake at resting metabolism level, you can lose weight.
What is skeletal muscle?
Skeletal muscle is muscle attached to the bones that is used to move the body. If you do weight loss without exercise, you may lose skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle is important to maintain your resting metabolism as well as your functionality. Monitoring skeletal muscle during weight loss is key to avoid weight rebound in the future.

Scale is accurate with the weight as well as the body fat calculation. The button is a little awkward to press with your foot and it takes one or two seconds to zero calibrate the scale before you can weight yourself, but it's manageable.
By Joshua Mayfield (USA)
I have been using my HBF-400 for 3 weeks now and this is the happiest I've ever been with a scale. First off, the fact that it shows weight down to the first decimal point helps me track my progress from one day to the next; less frustrating than waiting 3-4 days for the next full pound to count down. It is also very consistent; shows you the same numbers after multiple consecutive uses.
In the time I've been tracking the numbers, the body fat percentage value has come down overall, but it's the one measurement that has the greatest day-to-day variability; it might go up or remain constant on a given day even if the other measurements drop. You have to kind of average out your results, I think, to consider it a useful metric.
So, my one complaint is that, while the user profiles feature is nice, I'm the only person using this scale. I want to be able to just turn it on and hop on to get my weight/percentage/BMI. But if you don't select your user profile after turning on the scale, it will only tell you your weight.
I'd have preferred that they designed it to default to the last-used profile. You could change it on startup if anyone else used the scale, otherwise you could just power up and hop on.
I won't take a star off for that though, this has proven to be a very useful way to track my progress.

This scale could only measure weight. Body fat is waaaaaay off. Other reviews have also noted this.
By Alvin Chang (San Francisco, CA)
Take the positive reviews with a grain of salt.
After a year, as other reviewers have reported, the display elements would flicker or not turn on which made
it impossible to read and unusable.
Worked when it worked, but would not recommend the device.
The units go bad quickly for something this pricey.
Replaced the batteries twice to no effect.
Company was no help.
By Mark Faine (HUNTSVILLE, AL, US)
I've had this scale for over a year and it functions well so long as you are not operating it on carpet. Personally, I think that is a fairly big flaw though others may not think so. Also, from reading the features you'd think that it maintains a memory of users but not really. Every single time you want to way yourself you have to push a button to indicate which user and allow it time to calibrate. I'd rather it just assume the default user unless told otherwise.
